Pastoral Commentary for Joshua 21
Author: Pastor Bob Nordlie
Although the Levites did not receive an allotment of land like the other Tribes, there were towns established within the territory of the other tribes for the Levites to dwell. The pasture land surrounding those towns was also dedicated to the use of the Levites for their livestock. Once again, this was done as God had commanded through Moses. The final verses of Joshua 21 says it all: "So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them. Not one of all the LORD's good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled." God's Word is true! What He promises, He delivers! The promise to Abraham was made hundreds of years earlier, but its fulfillment was never in doubt, even though many generations of Abraham's descendants came and went before the Promised Land came into Israel's possession. So too, we should never doubt Christ's promised return, even though generations of believers have come and gone since Christ's death, resurrection and ascension. Peter warned us that scoffers would say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised?" (2 Peter 3:4) But God always keeps His promises, and the day of the LORD will surely come! We can look forward to it with absolute confidence.
